Originally, there were two area codes for this area: 0625 for Macclesfield and 0996 for Wilmslow. At some point before the mid-1990s, the 0996 code was withdrawn and all numbers were transferred into the 0625 code. This then eventually became 01625, following a renumbering programme that took place across the UK during April 1995.
