Area code history
Thurso and Tongue had separate area codes until some time in the 1980s. Numbers from the former Tongue 0800 area code were absorbed into the 0847 area code (which later became 01847).
As a result of these two formerly separate codes being merged, the current area code 01847 has the unusual feature of serving two separate non-adjoining areas. The Strathy 01641 area code is used between the Thurso and Tongue areas.
The 0800 prefix was reused for freephone services later in the 1980s.
