Area code history
The Coventry area code changed from 0203 to 01203 during April 1995, as part of a nationwide renumbering. In 2000, phone numbers were lengthened from six to eight digits and the new 024 area code replaced the 01203 area code:
1995 | Code becomes 01203, with local numbers unchanged. |
2000 | Code becomes 024, with local numbers lengthened to 8 digits by prefixing with ’76’. For example, (01203) 833333 became (024) 7683 3333. |
2006 | Local numbers beginning with 77 introduced. |
2012 | Local numbers beginning with 75 introduced. |
Any number between (024) 2000 0000 and (024) 9989 9999 is available for use in Coventry – but only local numbers beginning with 75, 76 and 77 are in use so far as of mid-2018.
The 024 area code has ten times the capacity of the codes allocated to bigger cities such as Birmingham (0121). This reflects the fact that when first introduced the 024 area code was planned to replace a large number of other area codes in the Midlands at a later date. This would have led to a single area code across a large area of the Midlands, with all landlines able to dial each other using just the eight-digit local number.
